Over the past year the economy has presented significant challenges
for many organizations.
Unfortunately, it has taken a severe toll on our friends and
colleagues in the not for-profit world.
Grassroots organizations that depend on grants and donations
have seen a significant reduction in income.
Many have reduced salaries, laid off staff, cut benefits, or
any combination of the above.
Reports estimate that one in four non-profits will cease to
operate before the economy turns around.
Not only is this sad, it makes no sense, because many of these
organizations work tirelessly to advocate for high quality, cost
effective health care.
The problem is, many of these non-profits operate on a modest budget
with little margin to absorb the effects of the economic downturn.
In
March, the Maine Hospice Council and Center for End of Life Care,
along with the Maine Association for Mental Health Services
negotiated an agreement to share office space and create
efficiencies. In other
words, working together to reduce operational expenses for both
organizations in order to maintain programming.
This has been an exciting venture and, we hope, a potential
model for sustainability.
MHC has a long history of partnerships.
Last year, the MHC was hired by the National Hospice and
Palliative Care Organization, with funding from the Department of
Veteran Affairs, to manage a new national initiative called
“Reaching Out: Improving End of Life Care for Rural and Homeless
Veterans.” Working
together to improve the lives of very vulnerable segments of our
population is incredibly satisfying.
Our resourcefulness is something to be proud of, but we still need
your help! If you want
to make sure that the Maine Hospice Council and Center for End of
Life Care continues to address access to quality end of life care,
please take a moment to send us a donation.
Just think, if every person in Maine sent us $1 the Maine
Hospice Council would be able to continue its work for 4 years!
Please give what you can and thank you for continuing to support our
work!
With appreciation,
