Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is the representative body of the membership of the Council.  The Board of Directors shall be governing body of the Council and shall be responsible for the overall policy, operation, and management of the Council.  The membership of the Board of Directors shall include, but not be limited to, representation from the following communities:<

  • Hospice physician

  • Clergy/spiritual counselor

  • Finance person

  • Marketing person

  • Legislative person

  • Media person

  • Certified program. All provider members will be from the Provider Advisory Committee.

  • Four at Large, such as Philanthropist, Funeral Director, Regulatory person, or other interested community persons.

The organization name following each board member name is their place of employment and does not denote representation from that organization.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is established according to the by-laws of the Council.

Guidelines

  • Conducts necessary business requiring board approval between regularly scheduled meetings of the board.
  • Makes minutes of Executive Committee meetings available to the Board of Directors prior to the next scheduled board meeting. President provides report at the board meeting.
  • Plans and reviews issues and agenda to be presented at the next scheduled board meeting in collaboration with the executive director.
  • Annually oversees the development of short and long-term goals to be approved by the full board.
  • Evaluates and oversees the activities of all committees.
  • Evaluates board member performance annually.
  • Functions as the board grievance committee.
  • Coordinates the evaluation process of the Executive Director.
  • Address governance issues of the Board, including overseeing Board Manual and Bylaws.
  • Evaluates bylaws annually.
  • Monitors compliance with bylaws.
  • Responsible for the efficient, effective governing of the Board.
  • Responsible for development of the Directors through education.
  • Assures understanding and compliance with parliamentary procedure.

Provider Advisory Committee

The Provider Advisory Committee will act as a vehicle for communication between the Maine Hospice Council Board of Directors and direct service programs regarding relevant hospice issues.  The Provider Advisory Committee shall consist of four representatives from Medicare certified providers and four from volunteer providers. The Providers will serve a three year term with a maximum of two consecutive terms on the Provider Advisory Committee. 

Guidelines

  • Act as a forum for in-depth discussions about provider issues.
  • Respect one another's perspectives and interact as a team.
  • Collaborate on solutions to provider issues.
  • Bring issues of importance to the attention of the MHC Board.
  • Make recommendations to the Board and staff for follow-up.

Advisory Committee

The Maine Hospice Council Advisory Committee was created by the Board of Directors in 1995 to provide professional as well as consumer input to the Board regarding assessment of current services, existing trends, areas of potential growth, policy, legislation, funding, and public relations. Committee membership is selected from, but not limited to consumers, lawyers, medical professionals, human services, social workers, pharmacy, education nursing, therapies, clergy, state government, third-party payers, and long-term care providers.

The Advisory Committee will provide expertise and counsel to the MHC Board of Directors.  Committee member perspectives will serve as an environmental scan for both MHC's short term work plan and long range strategic planning process.

Guidelines

  • Input will be solicited in areas of existing trends, current services, potential growth, policy, legislation, fundraising and public relations.
  • The committee will advise the Board from an independent perspective.
  • Minutes, including appropriate recommendations, will be made available to the Board after each meeting.
  • Advisory Committee members will be welcome to attend all MHC Board Meetings.

Committee meeting are rotate among committee member locations.  All committee schedules are subject to change.  Please call the Maine Hospice Council office for updated information.

Board Meeting

2:30 to 4:30 3rd Thursday of Odd numbered months (Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep, Nov) with an Annual Full Council Meeting in June.

Executive Committee

2:30 to 4:30 3rd Thursday of Even numbered months (Feb, Apr, Aug, Oct, Dec) and as needed

Provider Advisory Committee Third Thursday of every month from 1:00 to 2:15

Maine Hospice Event Committee 4:00 to 5:00 4th Thursday of each month unless it is holiday, at which point to be held the 3rd Thursday.
