Code of Ethics

The staff and board members of the Maine Hospice Council and Center for End-of-Life Care (Council) will at all times:

  1. Be guided by the highest standards of personal integrity.
  2. Strive to inspire confidence in the Council’s work.
  3. Serve their colleagues, interns, members of the legislature and State Government, the citizens of Maine, foundation partners and others with respect, concern, courtesy, and responsiveness.
  4. Keep the legislature and public informed on pertinent issues regarding end-of-life care.
  5. Strive for professional excellence and encourage the professional development of associates and those seeking to enter the field of hospice, palliative and end-of-life care. The goal is to provide the highest quality, most dignified cost effective end-of-life care for the people of Maine with the vision of creating a more responsive environment for end-of-life care.
  6. Approach organizational and operations duties with a positive attitude and constructively support open communication, cooperation, creativity, dedication and compassion.
  7. Avoid any interest or activity which may appear in conflict with professional responsibilities and serve in a manner as to avoid inappropriate personal gain.
  8. Respect and protect any privileged information to which there has been access.
  9. Use discretion when promoting the public interest.
  10. Accept the responsibility to be informed of emerging issues in end-of-life care and to address these issues with professional competence, fairness, and effectiveness.
  11. Assure equal opportunity for all individuals in regard to recruitment, access, selection, and advancement.
  12. Respect and value the work done by employees of the Council and its related associates and partners.
